PROJECT OVERVIEW

Client: The Poop School

Project: Branding & Visual Identity for Children’s Health Curriculum

The Poop School, an educational initiative focused on teaching children about digestive health, needed a playful yet informative brand identity that would engage young students while also being approachable for educators and parents. The goal was to create a visual identity that balances fun and education, making a potentially sensitive topic accessible and enjoyable for kids.

Design Process

Understanding the Audience

Given the sensitive nature of the subject, the first step was to deeply understand the young audience and the educational context. The challenge was to create a brand that would resonate with children while ensuring that the messaging remained educational and appropriate. To achieve this, my team and I explored various child-friendly design elements and educational materials, drawing inspiration from animated characters, vibrant colors, and playful typography.

Character & Logo Design

The heart of The Poop School’s brand identity lies in its characters - Mr. Dump, Tippy, and Tum Tum. Each character was designed with a specific purpose: to personify different aspects of digestive health in a way that is relatable and fun for children. Their designs incorporate exaggerated, friendly features and bright colors to ensure they are memorable and engaging. The characters play a crucial role in making the educational content more interactive and less intimidating.

Illustrations & Visual Elements

The visual elements, including icons and illustrations, were designed to support the educational content without overwhelming it. Simple, cartoon-like illustrations were created to depict various digestive processes, making it easier for small children to grasp complex concepts. The visual style is consistent across all materials, ensuring a unified brand experience that is both fun and educational.

Concept Development

With a clear understanding of the target audience, we began conceptualizing a brand identity that would strike a balance between education and entertainment. The primary focus was to ensure that the brand was not only visually engaging but also capable of simplifying complex concepts about digestive health into digestible (pun intended!) and fun content for children

Typography and Color Palette

For typography, Rubik Bold was selected for headings to ensure clarity and draw attention, while Rubik regular serves as the body text for readability. Thelande Sans Regular was introduced for subheadings to maintain a consistent yet dynamic visual hierarchy. The playful, rounded nature of Rubik complements the friendly and approachable tone of the brand, making the content both readable and engaging for young minds.

The color palette was chosen to create a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Primary colors like ‘Ocean Blue’ and ‘Sky Blue’ provide a calming background, while brighter tones like ‘Pear Green’ and ‘Tiger Orange’ add energy and excitement. The inclusion of ‘Poop Brown’ was a deliberate choice to keep the theme light-hearted and to directly relate to the curriculum’s subject matter. These colors not only enhance the visual appeal but also help in categorizing the content for better understanding.

The final branding for The Poop School effectively balances playfulness with educational integrity. Every element, from the characters to the color palette, was designed to make the topic of digestive health engaging and approachable for children. The visual identity created here not only captures the attention of young learners but also supports educators in delivering the curriculum in a way that is both effective and enjoyable.

This project was a unique challenge that allowed me to explore the intersection of education and entertainment. The success of The Poop School branding lies in its ablility to make a typically uncomfortable topic approachable and fun, proving that with thoughtful design, any subject matter can be made engaing and accessible for children.
